Green lines show where each star is heading over the next 20,000 years. Motion is drawn in straight lines, ignoring the slow curve of orbits around the galaxy, so far-future and far-past positions are rough. About half the stars lack a measured speed towards or away from us, so their motion is only partly known, and older catalogue speeds can be off (see Gliese 710).
